BROADCAST AND CORPORATE VIDEO PRODUCTION IN BRISTOL

HOW MUCH DOES A VIDEO COST?

A video isn't double glazing or potatoes; you can't measure it by the yard or kilo...

Every job is different, every job is unique.

In reality, the cost of a video for your website could be as little as £50, up to £5000 or even ten times that!

The difference in costs reflects the different production values, skills, and time brought to the production.

A SIMPLE film wouldn't need much more than just half a day of filming and a simple edit.

Beyond that we would be looking to add SOME of the following into the mix:

COLLABORATION

Video production is a collaborative process.

The best production is not best achieved by one man
and his chihuahua.

(Ah...)

We are very good at what we do; we are exceptionally good at knowing when external experts can offer more to the production than we can.

The finished production, looking its very best, is more important to us than making excessive profits.

PRE-PRODUCTION:

Prior to filming, we will meet with you as often as is necessary to discuss the needs of the production and exactly what you want to achieve from the video.

This is as true for a £500 video as it is for a £500,000 video.

We will organise the best team for your needs.

SCRIPTING:

Hitchcock once said that a film is made twice, the second time on location.

(See editing).

LOCATION AND TRAVEL:

Travelling to and from location can make production costs soar.

Careful planning, in most instances, will be essential to making the project viable.

PRESENTER:

Ever been a news anchor or reporter when the lead item fails and the autocue goes down and you're ten seconds to air? Ever interviewed the Prime Minister?

Both Bob and Sherrie have many years broadcast experience of news production, studio recording, live inserts, filming on location and flying by the seat of their pants.

But we can choose alternative presenters - or none at all - depending upon the needs of the production.

ACTORS:

We have access to actors from 8 to 80.

(The ITV Drama workshop is right next door to our office.)

CAMERAS AND LENSES:

We always shoot on broadcast spec cameras with a range of good quality lenses.

We are able to shoot on SD or HD (1080p), DVCam through to HD-Cam SR as required.

ARCHIVE MATERIAL:

If it is required, archive film material should be used judiciously. It can be prohibitively expensive.

(But a series of stills, often with few copyright concerns, can often serve the same purpose.)

EDITING:

A film is made twice... once on location, secondly in the edit.

(See scripting).

COLOUR CORRECTION:

The 'invisible' art of the edit suite.

We are fully equipped to produce excellent results in colour correction

GRAPHICS:

Stuart has nearly twenty years experience of tickling pixels.

John has a whole shelf of books on how to do the same, and he must get round to reading them one of these days.

This is a partial list of our graphics software:

After Effects, Shake, Motion, Photoshop, Illustrator, Mocha, SynthEyes, Magic Bullet, Autodesk, 3ds MAx

ROTOSCOPING

Your MD is filmed in a busy office. Mr "eX" walks past in the background making a funny face. "Take him out of the picture!!"

"It can be done. We'll 'roto' him out of each frame."

(This actually happened. It took four days to tidy the shot.)

3D GRAPHICS:

A very specialised job... and potentially very expensive!

Logos, supers or other artwork created using specialized software.

Graphics always add production value to an otherwise dull video, and an extra '0' or two to the budget.

STUDIO:

We have several spaces available to us for small to medium scale studio recordings.

ITV Studios have a 1600sq ft, drive-in studio with computerised lighting rigs which are...

GREEN SCREEN:

...perfect for green-screen work.

OBs:

We can organise very cost-effective, multi-camera, outside-broadcast recording.

MATCH MOVING:

OK... we don't want to bore you with science. We'll let Wiki do it instead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match_moving

MOTION TRACKING:

Very useful software for placing objects into the frame.

Have a look at the following for an example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPuY2wdNAZ8

SOUND MIXING:

Sound mixing is another one of the invisible arts of video production.

Some (usually sound recordists) say it accounts for as much as 60% of the experience of the video.

We can mix simple sound tracks in the edit suite... but our office is directly above the Bath Road dubbing facilities of "films of 59". We are happy to defer to the experts.

MPEG ENCODING:

We can produce loading-efficient mpeg (H264) files in faster than real-time.

CLEARANCES

A minefield... as in 'it's a walk in the park', but if you stray off the path, you may end up paying an arm or a leg for it.

That latest U2 track? Mechanical copyright? Cleared for use worldwide? Did you get signed release forms from the talent and the location? Clearcast forms?

Claire is meticulous about these things.

DVD AUTHORING:

Put the DVD in the player... all those fancy menus? We have the technology and the experience.

(Actually, unless it's very simple, we have a man that does it for us.)

Blu-Ray? No problem!

SOFTWARE

We have lots of software. We even know how to use some of it.

Here are some names:

AVID, FCP, Shake, Motion, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Mocha, SynthEyes,
